Teachers and pupils from St Leonard’s Catholic School in Durham are celebrating after receiving an outstanding Ofsted judgement across all areas, following massive disruption in the last academic year.
St Leonard’s Catholic secondary school in Durham City- part of Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust (BWCET) – was one of three schools in the Trust who faced the devastating news at the end of August 2023, that they were unable to reopen on 1st September for pupils. This was due to the nationwide RAAC concrete crisis. For St Leonard’s, this impacted over 1,300 pupils and their families, as well as 150 staff.
Headteacher Chris Hammill said: “The challenge the school community faced during this time puts this achievement into even greater perspective.
“I’d like to pay tribute to the exceptional hard work and dedication of all my colleagues who have gone through one of the toughest experiences they will ever face in teaching. The pupils’ attitudes, actions and resilience have been utterly commendable.”
The school was judged outstanding in all areas including; quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and sixth-form provision.
Mr Hammill added: “This report highlighted that since the last inspection the school has made significant improvements for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). While it also noted we have an ambitious and inclusive curriculum in place and our subject specialists are exceptionally knowledgeable. This kind of praise is exceptionally pleasing.”
Ofsted also focused on the school’s nurturing environment, where “all pupils are known and loved.”
The report identified that the students at St Leonard’s excel in both academic and personal development, achieving exceptionally high standards in every area. It went on to focus on how the curriculum is meticulously crafted and delivered by highly knowledgeable staff, that challenges pupils and encourages a passion for learning.
Careers information integrates seamlessly into the curriculum at the school, with sixth-form students learning about all post 18 pathways available.
Mr Hammill continued: “I was delighted that the report identifies that beyond academics, St Leonard’s excels in fostering character and resilience. RAAC really
tested that mettle, but these outstanding pupils rose above it showing such dedication.”
Nick Hurn, CEO of BWCET, said: “Leaders, governors, parents, teachers, support staff and pupils alike have all demonstrated a commitment to achieving the highest standards, and create a supportive environment where teachers succeed and where pupils thrive in an academic and nurturing school. This ‘Outstanding’ rating is a testament to the whole school community.”
St Leonard’s was named as one of the schools prioritised for the School Rebuilding Programme and work is well underway by BAM, the appointed contractor, with completion due for Easter 2026
